We were both members before but I never went as was always away working so I cancelled it...both of them, she was less than impressed as I later found out she spent all her time there !....and no she wasn't noshing off the instructors or any of the members !.

So as a gift to her I bought her membership primarily for the classes, she loves pilates and yoga....and no, no link !

Re: David Lloyd
Everyone's different, started going to gyms with mates when I was a about 17 yrs, but I already had my own bench and loose weights when I was 14. Couldn't stand the gym, all that posing in the mirror competing malarkey. I have a phobia of public baths, I am not into sharing bodily fluids in a large bath or jacuzzi, many come straight from work and don't wash yuk.

I can see for some the benefits of the social side, don't do much weights now due to back but I want to get away from th everyday hustle and bustle of people not surround myself with more, the solitude is what I enjoy whether it's running with music in the park or at home when the weather prohibits on the treadmill.

I bought a commercial gym standard treadmill which is about £100 per month for 18 months, better investment for me, just walk down to the basement instead of driving half an half to and from the gym and shower without getting warts.

Re: David Lloyd
Has your missus expressed an interest in wanting membership? if not a very dodgy gift as she'll see it as you thinking she's fat and needs to lose weight.

Re: David Lloyd
140 joint non rackets membership at Southend.

As said, it is a nice place to spend time. Great facilities generally well maintained and never overbusy.

But, it is expensive unless you get there at least twice per week and not just to dive in, do some cardio and leave again.

If you can treat it more like a country club or social club and less like a gym then well worth it. If its just a gym with an occasional dip in the pool then it's not worth paying the premium is my view.

Re: David Lloyd
It's like a health and social club in one. I've made loads of mates there over the years. Some have moved overseas, so it's good to visit. It helps with networking too. They have a few club nights and quiz"s but I haven't only been to a few.

You can watch sports, get cheap booze at working men's club prices. The food is decent there, I'd prefer eat there than any chain restaurant like Prezzo, Pizza Express, wagamama, etc.

For me the best thing is, having a steam, sauna and then jumping in the ice cold plunge pool and chilling for a couple of minutes after a stressful day.

I pay council tax and go running through the park and local country footpaths.

I don't have to put up with strangers pubes in the shower at home.

Bargain.

I was a member for years before emigrating, used to use it at least twice a week often more.

Just a nice place to spend time.

Re: David Lloyd
Aside from gym, pool, courts etc, what do you get for the membership?

Like what makes it special?

Is it just a status thing?

Genuinely curious as there's one near me, not taking the piss.

Re: David Lloyd
I absolutely love the place. I've just got back from sitting outside by the pool with the family.

I've been a member for 8 years (Gidea Park). My mate was a Personal Trainer at the time and put me on her friends and family discount. So I was paying £50 per month for rackets and everything else. I wanted the Vantage/celcius membership so that was an extra £20 = £70. Over the last 8 years it had increased to £81, which was still an amazing deal.

Recently, I've switched to the Basildon gym because I use Gidea Park, Basildon, Chigwell and Southend several times a month. Basildon offered me £131 for me, the Mrs, my kids 7 and 1. Still a good deal.

I love David Lloyd. I'd still go there even if they doubled the cost of my membership!

Re: David Lloyd
Me and the missus gave up membership about eleven years ago and were paying about £110 joint membership at the time, for the basic membership. We had to give three months notice as well when we cancelled. My wife now belongs to Puregym which as the name suggests is just a gym. With David Lloyd you could end up paying for stuff you’lll never or hardly ever use.
